Just like anything that requires diligence, potty training a puppy will go much smoother if you set a schedule. It can be very easy to let phone calls, work, family and other normal activities get you off course. So setting a fairly rigorous schedule will keep you focused and cut your potty training time in half.

When devising a schedule, take your puppy outside once an hour. Stay close by him but pretend to be invisible so you don’t distract him at all. Allow him to sniff around. If he relieves himself while you’re outside, praise him, telling what a good dog he is while he is actually peeing or pooping. Be sure to make a big fuss over it and let him know you are extremely proud of him. Use a particular word for his elimination. Be consistent with whatever words you choose so that he will learn the words you are using and associate them with going to the bathroom. In the future, your dog will learn to hold it until you get outside.

However, if after being outside for three or four minutes, your puppy doesn’t go to the bathroom, come back inside and try again in ten minutes. Repeat this process as many times as necessary. If you give up, your puppy will get confused and not understand what you want him to do.

Puppies normally need to go right after they eat and immediately after they wake up. Consistently take your puppy outside at these times so they can establish a routine. Since they go many other times too, keep a close eye on him so you can be ready to take him out. If your puppy runs away from playing game, it may mean he needs to use the bathroom. After a few days of watching him, you’ll learn his patterns and be able to keep his messes outside where they belong.

Below Is An Interesting Article On Dog Training

Many dog owners feel that the best and easiest way to potty train a puppy is through crate training. Although most will say this is true, crate training can be a bad experience if not done right. That’s why there are so many pet owners who wonder why it didn’t work.

If you follow confirmed methods of crate training, you can make this stage both a positive and rewarding experience for both you and your pup. First you must realize that dogs don’t see things like we do. Neither can they understand cause and effect if any amount of time has gone by. A huge misconception is that dogs understand the spoken language like humans. They can learn to understand you but only when in conjunction with something meaningful to them. Dogs are also are alarmed and confused by anger.

Now that you understand how a puppy learns, you have to decide on the type of crate to use. The crate should only be large enough for the puppy to stand up, turn around, and lay down. Don’t leave room for him to potty in one spot and sleep in another. Keep the crate in a part of the house where the family spends a lot of time. Dogs are pack animals. They want to be where you are so they feel a part of the pack.

When introducing the crate, be carefully not to shove the puppy in. Let the puppy go in own his own. Put something familiar to him inside so it encourages him to go into the crate. If he’s hesitant, put a treat at the door and leave the door open for now. Slowly start to shut the door when the puppy is inside. Leave it closed for just a few seconds at first and then for longer periods of time when the puppy is more comfortable.

Mrs Bjorkman, Leigh On Sea. What a great way to keep your carpets stain free. great idea.
